QOV 3 finished top!

My third QOV top is finally pieced, pressed, and ready to be quilted.

The only thing I have left to do is piece the backing together so that I can request a longarmer and ship it off.

I chose to use Moda's American Primer "Hair Ribbons" fabric for the backing.  I got four yards of it at the Houston quilt festival especially for a QOV.  I think that I'll just do a solid red for the quilt binding to keep it simple.

Piecing backings is my least favorite quilt task.  I find it difficult to get a really straight edge over a long length of fabric.  I'm also hoping that I have enough yardage to match-up the pattern on the back.  If anyone out there has some tips or tricks they use to really square up their backings, I'd be glad to know them.

  1. Your quilt is lovely, can't help you with piecing the backing but looking forward to seeing the advice from people who can!

  3. I tear my backings because I can't cut a straight edge for a long piece either. It has worked well for me.

  7. Such a beautiful quilt! I usually tear, then lightly wash backing to square them. For you, wanting to match patterns, you would want to sew it first, then wash. If you don't want to actually tear it, you could use the old method of pulling a thread and cutting on the cross grain that way. This quilt will surely be a treasure to whomever receives it.

  8. When I piece my backing, I try to leave the selvedge edge intact and add width to the backing in the center or off center. I like to do it off center so the seam will not be where the quilt will usually be folded.

I often add left over blocks or left over pieces from the front to make the backing wider.

You top is outstanding. Anyone who knows quilting will admire the top as well the time and skill you put into it.

  11. That looks fabulous! I love the pattern and the backing is perfect. Is the one place the pattern is different, over on the left hand side done that way on purpose? I like that pattern too.

  12. I love your drunkard's path. The design is one of my favorites. I, too, do not get excited about the backing but it's got to be done.
    Take care.

  15. Nice quilt. Lots of work in this one. I find the best part is piecing a back to use up all the fabrics that are leftover from the top! A patriot is going to appreciate you! Sandi
