Pink Mosaics

Rachel over at Stitched in Color announced a pink themed mosaics contest sponsored by sew modern fabrics this week until the 23rd.  This is right up my alley because pink is one of my very favorite colors and almost all the projects that I've worked on since the first of the year have included pink. So, it was no hardship to peruse the pink fabrics and put together two different bundles that I'd love to win.

My first mosaic is titled "Pink is Bold" because pink is not just a soft girly color; it can be bold and strong.

Extra Special Fabric in Guthrie OK

During my visit to the United States this summer I got to go to several really fun quilt shops.  I have come to believe that quilters enjoy shopping for fabric almost as much as they like sewing.  I know that I personally make it a point to go to at least one (if not more) quilt shops in the areas that we are visiting whenever possible.  I love getting to meet local quilters to swap stories, techniques, and ideas.

One of the amazing shops that I visited during our vacation was in Guthrie Oklahoma.  My husband and I were there overnight to belatedly celebrate our wedding anniversary.  We stayed at a little B&B, enjoyed some dinner theater down in OK city, and then visited Guthrie before we started back to go rescue the Grandparents from the babies.

Because my husband was in a generous anniversary mood, I got to go visit the Extra Special fabric shop around the corner from our B&B in historic down town Guthrie.  It's nestled along side of several antique stores, thrift shops, cafes, and home decor stores.

Extra Special Fabric was amazingly fun and really lives up to its name.  I love going to shops that really reflect the area and Extra Special Fabric specializes in western and southwest themed fabrics.  They had everything you could possibly think of related to western fabric ranging from allover bluebonnet florals, to bandanna prints, and lots of cowboy and western novelty prints too.

DSCN4068

The ladies in the shop were great and made me feel like an old friend come for a visit and not an out of town tourist buying a few fat quarters.

DSCN4073

Speaking of, here is one side of their fat quarter station.  I love fat quarters and bought several western and patriotic FQs for my stash.  I also visited the sale table right behind this, and am still kicking myself for not buying a few yards of the arrow fabric that was on sale for a future quilt back.

DSCN4067

I loved that they had lots of samples up on the walls of their aprons and quilt kits.  You could buy a ready made apron or get the fabric and make one yourself.  I love shops that have items that non-sewers can purchase.  This way, when I take friends (or husbands) who don't ooh and aah over fabric bolts with me, they can feel involved and have a good time too.

DSCN4078

Here's a lovely little Texas wall quilt sample.  Very patriotic and cute.

DSCN4080

And, the most important chair in the whole shop.  The husband chair.  Side table, fan, and magazines.  Very smart ladies :) I'm sure many a husband has relaxed in this chair so his lovely wife can fabric shop.

DSCN4066

This was one of the most exciting parts of the shop for me.  The SCRAP BIN! I love scraps, I hoard them, and I love finding shops that sell them at reasonable rates.  Let's just say the the halfway empty state of this basket is due to me buying around two one-gallon bags stuffed to near overload with scraps.

DSCN4076

I had a wonderful time talking and shopping at Extra Special Fabrics and can honestly say that if you are in the area, this shop is a must visit.  Thank you ladies for being kind and patient with all my photo taking and question.  See you next time :)

Who else has found special fabric shops while on holiday?

Stash Report

I've been adding some new fabrics to my stash lately!  I totally fell in love with the Michael Miller children at play fabrics after buying the pink balloons fabric for the Novelty Squares exchange.  Luckily I order extra of that fabric because I knew I wanted some for myself too.  Now, I've added a few more fabrics from that line to my stash along with some others that I'm squirreling away for future projects.

I'm so grateful to Cotton Blossom Farm for the quick and reasonable shipping and actually having all the fabrics that I was looking for (including some that I wasn't looking for but had to have after seeing them; funny how that happens.  It's like how chocolate magically jumps into my cart at the grocery store).  I'm always happy to discover fabric shops that carry everything I'm looking for in one place.  It saves on both hassle and shipping to order all at once.  It's also nice when an online store has such great customer service :-) I'm a very happy girl today!
DSCN1911
The "On Parade" border fabric might be my favorite.  I really want to make a birthday dress for my daughter out of this print.  Her birthday has already passed this year, but I wanted to order this fabric now because you never know when a line will become hard to find.  I looked at a lot of online fabric stores who were sold out already.
DSCN1906
I also got some polka-dot fabric in yellow and blue, some American Jane "tickets in cream" and some little apples fabric in red that will make it into an I spy, and of course the children at play fabric.  I just love the little girls playing with their dolls and the boy chasing the airplane.
DSCN1903
I also broke down and ordered some flea market fancy fabric. I have got to admit that I now know why everyone seems to love this fabric.  It is beautiful.  I'm thinking that the bouquet in grey is going to end up as a little purse for me.  The blues and yellow are likely going to be in a quilt.  I also planted my window boxes yesterday.  I'm loving my new red geraniums.  It's finally starting to feel like spring here.

Stale Stash Bounty

Wow, it's so good to be back home from vacation!  We had an incredible time in France with the kids, but I'm happy to be back home.  I have a ton to share with everyone about my trip and some great inspirational photos that I plan on posting, but today I'm going to do a little catching up.

DSCN1634

Last month I got to enjoy swapping out some of my fabrics with a few other bloggers out there.  When I got back this week, I had a few nice little packages waiting for me at the post office; it was like Christmas. I would like to thank Fiona at Celtic Thistle, Cheraldine at I Be's Cheraldine, and Dana at Drinking Fabric for swapping with me.  Most of this fabric will make it into my I spy quilt and the rest is going to find a home in a project that I'll be making in the future.

Fabric Bundle Contest

I am a Ginger Monkey along with Pink Castle Fabrics is hosting a great little create your own bundle contest where you get to play bundle designer.  The contest is running through the 31st and all you have to is create a bundle with 12 of your favorite fabrics from the Pink Castle selection and then link them up at Ginger Monkey.  If your bundle is chosen as the best, you win it!  Pretty cool, huh!  Beware, the competition is steep.  I was checking out some of the bundles that have already been linked, and there are some really cool selections out there.

My bundle reminds me of summers in Morro Bay when I was a kid.  It's one of my favorite places on Earth.  In the morning is can be rainy and overcast, and then the sun shines all day and the flowers bloom on the dunes.  If you were lucky, you could see whales breaching from the shore sometimes.  It was a great time.

Novelty and Colors Layer Cake Swap

After all the swapping fun I've had this last week, I've decided to join in on just one more swap.  My husband must be wondering where all his envelopes have gone this month :)

Hilachas and My Sister Made Me Do It have teamed up to offer the Novelty and Colors Layer Cake Swap.

Hilachas

Everyone is swapping 12 10x10 Blender and a Novelty fabrics each.  Hilachas has a list of colors available and a Flickr group set up so we can all see what the others are sending (also so we don't accidentally buy the same Novelty fabrics).  I think there are still a few slots open until the 28th of March 2012 for those who are interested.  I've signed up to swap a Navy blender and a Fuchsia blender with their accompanying novelty fabrics.  I had a great Navy that I wanted to use, but alas they requested that the fabric be unwashed, and I religiously was my fabrics after purchase.  That's okay, I found four really great fabrics that I love and ordered them today from Fabric.com for the swap.  I love Fabric.com because I've never had a problem getting even big orders shipped to my APO.

Navy

Cassette tapes

Fuchia

Balloons

I agonized over which fabric to buy!  I loved them ALL, especially the novelty fabrics.  I was torn between a really great whale fabric and the cassette tapes.  I finally decided on the tapes because my seven-year-old son came in the room and asked me "What are those?"  I remember cassette tapes, and taping songs off the radio when I was a teen.  Good times :) So, I just had to get them.  I also love the balloons.  I was trying to get Novelty fabric than went with my blenders.  I think that this will make them more useable later on.

There's still fun to be had for other would be swappers who want to join in.  Hope to see some of you there :)

Stale Stash Swap

*This swap is now closed.  Thank you all for swapping with me.  It was great fun :)*
Charm About You

Lucy at Charm about you is hosting another Fabulous Fabric Event!

I love FQs.  I buy them more than any other cut of fabric, but sometimes I buy something for a future project that never comes to fruition, and then I have beautiful fabric that just sits in the drawer.  These seven pieces of fabric would love to get swapped to someone who can really use them.  Just FYI, the green dragonfly is actually 2 FQs that are currently married.  I can divorce them, but if someone would like them both it would be a shame to break them up.

stash

I'm hoping to swap with someone for some unique novelty fabrics!  I'm making a 400 piece I spy and I need some more squares!  I've got 350 4.5" squares done, so it's been hard finding stuff I don't have.  I'm perfectly happy to trade a FQ for I spy scraps as long as they are 5"x5" and I can get a usable image from them. Think weird!  Think sushi or balloon animals or parrots or anything really!  If you've got strange novelty fabric that is just sitting around see if I have something you'd like instead. :)

Just FYI this tangerine dot fabric is NOT designer. It is from Hobby Lobby, but the quality is good. I have 1 yard (or 4FQs of this one) 1/2 yard (2FQ) left.

Fugly fabric party giveaway!

UPDATE - This giveaway is now closed.

The WINNERS
Wendy - Pack A, Gina - Pack B, Sallie - Pack C

Lucy at Charm About You is hosting a fugly fabric party.
Fugly Fabric Party

Here's the deal.  We all have fabric that we don't want anymore.  I personally have inherited some pretty fugly fabrics over the years from friends who didn't want it to go to waste.  The problem is,  I'll NEVER use it, but the fabric hoarder in me can't throw it out because it is perfectly good fabric.

So, I'm giving away two packs of fabric (one per winner) to anyone who comments below. Tell me what you think you can do with this fabric, and which fabric pack you want.  The people whose answers I like the best will win! I will pay postage anywhere in the USA.

PACK A
DSCN9658
This pack of fabric contain 1/2 yard to whole yard cuts of the orange flower and blue fabrics.  The pooh fabric is at least two yards.

PACK B
DSCN9655
Pack B contains a variety of 1/4 yard cuts, some small scraps, and about 1 yard of the grey fabric (the grey is a slightly heavier weight cotton)

PACK C
DSCN9675
These are not exactly fugly, but they have been living in a large dark tote box for years and long to see the light of a sewing machine! 4FQs and 1yrd

This giveaway closes on Valentines day morning (Berlin time) and the winner will be announced shortly after that.  So, someone please take this fabric Good Luck to Everyone.
